P.GRIS + AMIS Pinot Gris
Vintage: 2022
Tasting notes: Fresh as a daisy, but with plenty going on. Aromatics of quince, citrus peel and white flowers, with hints of ginger spice and a gentle savoury twist. The palate is textured but refreshing - there’s grip and character from skin contact, balanced by clean acidity and a dry, layered finish. It’s bright, delicious, and just the right amount of wild. One glass tends to lead to another.
Winemaker’s notes: The little PiG and friends are back - running wild and naked through fields of flowers (metaphorically speaking). Fruit is sourced from Swinney’s excellent Wilson’s Pool vineyard in Frankland River, with Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer all picked on different dates to get them just right.
Each parcel got its own treatment for skin contact - longer or shorter depending on the fruit - before being pressed off to ferment wild, partly in tank and partly in big old barrels. After that, the wine spent a few months hanging out on lees to build texture and depth.
The result? A white wine with both freshness and complexity. Floral, layered with deliciousness and very, very drinkable. Made for warm days, good food and better company.
Reviews: 92 Points. Mike Bennie, The Winefront
“Pinot gris with pals riesling and gewurztraminer. Sometimes I imagine winemaker Andrew Hoadley holding an épée and thrusting away like Zorro. Quite a lot of quince and preserved lemon on in this wine, touches of ginger, some radish-like bitterness and peppery qualities, some barely there white balsamic tang too. It’s a wine of character and texture while still retaining a ‘white winey’ feel, albeit the grip and dryness in the palate is a step up and shows things off nicely. Refreshing, for sure, quite delicious really.”
Alcohol 12.0%.
