Syrah Soul

$36.00

Vintage: 2022

Tasting notes: Aromatic, spicy and layered with nuance, this Syrah opens with lifted notes of liquorice flower, red berries and whole-bunch spice. The palate is generous and finely structured - juicy fruit at its core, wrapped in savoury, spicy detail. Just over medium weight, with supple tannins and enough extract to cellar beautifully over the next 10+ years.

Winemaker’s notes: This wine is the result of several years of working with trial graftings of new Syrah clones at Swinney’s vineyard in Frankland River - clones 174, 470 and Waldron - each one bringing something distinct to the blend. The 2022 vintage was an ideal season for Syrah in the Great Southern, with mild ripening conditions allowing for slow, even development and layers of varietal complexity.

Fermentation took place in small open vessels using wild yeast, gentle hand plunging and a portion of whole bunch for lift and structure. After three weeks on skins, the wine was basket pressed to a mix of new and seasoned French oak for seven months’ maturation. Bottled unfined, with a touch of sulphur added just before release.

This is a clonal Syrah with both precision and personality - expressive, textural, and quietly powerful.
