Up! Shiraz
Vintage: 2022
Tasting notes: Vibrant, layered and full of energy, the 2022 Syrah opens with a burst of red and black fruits before evolving into savoury territory - think cured meats, game, and spice. The palate has a juicy flow, framed by florals, dark spice and a ferrous, mineral thread that anchors it all. Rich and concentrated, yet finely balanced, this wine captures the cool-climate Syrah soul of the Great Southern with depth and clarity.
Winemaker’s notes: Sourced from two standout sites - Karri Oak west of Mount Barker and a small parcel of new-generation Syrah clones from Swinney’s in Frankland River - this release showcases the diversity and power of Great Southern terroir. Grown on gravelly ironstone loam and granitic sands, the fruit delivers purity, structure and intensity.
Fermented in small open-top vessels over 14–28 days, with gentle hand plunging and traditional foot treading. Around 10% whole clusters were included for spice and lift. The wine was then pressed straight to large-format Slavonian oak fuders, plus French barriques and hogsheads (15% new oak), where it matured for 10 months before blending and bottling.
This is Syrah that speaks with a cool-climate accent - refined, textural and expressive of place.
